Synopsis:
My Fair Lady is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns “Eliza Doolittle”, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from “Professor Henry Higgins”, a phonetician, so that she may pass as a lady. The original Broadway and London shows starred Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews. The musical's 1956 Broadway production was a notable critical and popular success. It set a record for the longest run of any show on Broadway up to that time. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals. My Fair Lady has frequently been called "the perfect musical" and is the standard by which all other musicals are measured.
Gloriously triumphant, My Fair Lady features one of musical theatre’s greatest scores. Songs include “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?,” “With a Little Bit of Luck,” “The Rain in Spain,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “Get Me to the Church on Time,” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.”
Woodside Community Theatre’s My Fair Lady:
Well known and long-time Bay Area director, producer, and actor, John Baiocchi, will make his WCT directorial debut with this classic Broadway musical at the beautiful Woodside High School Performing Arts Center.
Baiocchi explains, “The language and lyrics of My Fair Lady are the height of intelligence, and the brilliant score is filled with iconic songs. Central to its amazing five-decades of popularity on the stage and screen is the intensely complex relationship between Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins, as originally created by George Bernard Shaw in the classic play, Pygmalion. As the story unfolds, these two strong characters leave each other changed forever in ways that are relevant to any new relationship, even today. A lark becomes a cause, and then a mutual transformation.”
Baiocchi will be supported in bringing this vision to the stage with Choreography by Gary Stanford, Jr., Vocal Direction by Heather O’Brien, Musical Direction by Kristin Pfeifer, Scenic Design by Akio Patrick, Lighting Design by Don Coluzzi, and Costume Design by Karen Patrick.
Starring in the leading roles are Alicia Teeter as “Eliza Doolittle”, Aaron Weisberg as “Henry Higgins” and Steven Anthony as “Colonel Pickering”. Rounding out the leading characters are Darlene Batchelder as “Mrs. Pearce”, Daniel Dominguez as “Alfred P. Doolittle”, Justin Kerekes as “Freddy Eynsford-Hill”, and Joan Pugh Newman as “Mrs. Higgins”. A very talented group of local and regional actors complete the cast and ensemble.
Woodside Community Theatre is a nonprofit community theater organization with the goal of promoting the theatrical arts for the mid-peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area and the surrounding area. WCT has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years and currently offers one major Broadway musical each year.
